Eidul Fitr - Its Etiquette, Greeting, and Prayer

  • Eidul Fitr is the celebration that marks the end of Ramadan fasting.
  • Eidul Fitr is always on the first day of the month of Shawwal (the month after Ramadan).
  • The main event on this day is the observance of the Eid prayer. It is from the sunnah for the Eid prayer to be prayed in a musalla (wide open space outside). Later on in the day families generally do activities together including playing games, sports, eating, and visiting neighbors, friends, and other family.
The following are resources I have collected/made to help learn about and observe the day of Eid and the Eid prayer.

Preparing for the Eid Prayer/Setting Out for the Eid Prayer

1. Eat before the Eid Prayer:
Anas (radiAllahu anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah (salla Allahu alayhi wasallam) would not set out in the morning of Eid ul Fitr until he had eaten some dates(Bukhari)

2. Bathing before the Eid Prayer:

There is no "authentically reported" sunnah from the Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) according to "The Rulings Concerning the Two Eids."

However, it is preferred and it is a sunnah of the Companions (that is, their way and guidance).."ibn Umar (radia Allahu anhumaa) used to bathe on the day of Fitr." ("The Rulings Concerning the Two Eids" by Shaykh Abul Haarith 'Alee Hasan 'Alee Abdul Hameed)

3. Going to the Musalla, Returning a different way
"When it was the day of Eid, the Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) use to alter his route (of returning). (Bukhari)

Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim al Jaqzeeyah said:

"The Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi was sallam) used to change his route on the days of Eid, such that he went by one route and returned by another. It is said (he did this)to give salaam upon the people of both routes. Or so that both groups get some of his blessings. Or so that anybody who has a need can take care of it. Or to make manifest the ritual of Islaam....("The Rulings Concerning the Two Eids" by Shaykh Abul Haarith 'Alee Hasan 'Alee Abdul Hameed)

Eid Greetings

Photobucket
Shaykh ul Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah, when asked about the greeting/congratulations of Eid said:

"As for the greeting on the day of Eid, then it is by saying to one another when meeting after the prayer:

Taqabbala Allahu minnaa wa minkum wa ahaala Allahu alayka
May Allah accept it from you and us and other things of this nature.

Ibn Qudaamah reported in Al Mugnee that Muhammad ibn Iyaad said: "I was with Abi Umamah al Baahilee and other companions of the Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam and when they returned from the Eid they said to each other:

Taqabbala Allahu minnaa wa minkum - May Allah accept it from you and us

The Eid Prayer

It is the Sunnah to Pray the Eid Prayer in a Musalla
Praying Eid in the Musalla is Sunnah (PDF), a treatise by Shaykh Albanee  - link fixed 5/30/2016,

Description of the Eid Prayer
The Description of The Eid prayer, Number of Rakats and The Eid Takbirs
See Fataawa Arkaan al-Islam by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him), p. 398;Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daaimah, 8/300-316).

The Eid prayer is one where the imam attends and leads the people in praying two rakahs. Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The prayer of al-Fitr is two rakahs and the prayer of al-Adha is two rakahs, complete and not shortened, on the tongue of your Prophet, and the one who fabricates lies is doomed. Narrated by al-Nasaai, 1420 and Ibn Khuzaymah. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Nasaai.

It was narrated that Abu Saeed said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to come out on the day of al-Fitr and al-Adha to the prayer place, and the first thing he would do was to offer the prayer. Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 956

In the first rakah he should say Takbeerat al-ihraam (say Allaahu akbar to start the prayer), after which he should say six or seven more takbeers, because of the hadeeth of Aaishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), The takbeer of al-Fitr and al-Adha is seven takbeers in the first rakah and five takbeers in the second, apart from the takbeer of rukoo. Narrated by Abu Dawood and classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Irwa al-Ghaleel, 639.

Then he should recite al-Faatihah, and recite Soorat Qaf in the first rakah. In the second rakah he should stand up saying takbeer, and when he has stood up completely he should say takbeer five times, and recite Soorat al-Faatihah then Soorat al-Qamr. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to recite these two soorahs during the two Eids. Or if he wishes he can recite Soorat al-Ala in the first rakah and Soorat al-Ghaashiyah in the second, because it was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to recite al-Ala and al-Ghaashiyah in the Eid prayer.

The imam should revive the Sunnah be reciting these soorahs so that the Muslims will become familiar with the Sunnah.

After the prayer, the imam should address the people. Part of the khutbah should be addressed specifically to the women, telling them of the things that they should do and warning them against the things that they should avoid, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to do.

Ramadan Journals

Ramadan Journal Templates

TJ Ramadan 2006 Daily Journal
The journal below was the very first Ramadan Journal that I made back in 2006! It is styled in a newsletter format and can be used year to year (student writes in the date).

Lots of goodies inside:

  • It has sections where your child can write or draw what they had for suhoor and iftaar, and what they good deeds they did that day.
  • It has a checklist for recording which prayers were made and if Quraan was read that day.
  • There is an ayaah or hadith that they can use for copywork
  • Finally, there is a writing activity and each day features a creative writing prompt to help get those writing juices flowing.
It is correlated with "It's Ramadan" Activities but the journal can be used on its own.

Ready to unleash some Ramadan productivity for the kids? Download the journal today!

On the template, as you might be able to see, your child can:
  • copy down an ayaah/hadith of the day.
  • write or draw what they had for suhoor and what they broke their fast with
  • write good deeds they may have done
  • write what quraan they read
  • jot down their thoughts about the day, or other things such as memorable events

And there's a cover:

The year before last, I printed the cover out on colored cardstock and wow....

One of my Ramadan journal templates, this one from 2011.

As with all of my templates, you can use them from year to year as your student/child writes in the date. This template is a 2 page template that can be printed back to back.

The first page includes a place to record moon sightings and checklists for activities completed throughout the day. The second page consists of a place to reflect upon the day.

Suhoor

Suhoor is the predawn meal that Muslims partake in before a day of fasting.

Is Imsak Permissible?
(Imsak is the practice of stopping eating/drinking at a predetermined time before the adhaan of fajr.)

When we were living in Egypt in a small town, each morning we would hear a big drum booming out Imsak, that it was time to stop eating (about 10 minutes or so) before the adhaan was to be called. Imsak is an innovation.

And the Prophet (??? ???? ???? ????) said: "Bilaal gives the adhaan at night, so eat and drink until you hear the adhaan of Ibn Umm Maktoom, for he does not give the adhaan until dawn comes." This imsaak which some of the people do is an addition to that which Allaah has enjoined, so it is false. It is a kind of extremism in religion, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Those who go to extremes are doomed, those who go to extremes are doomed, those who go to extremes are doomed." Narrated by Muslim, 2670

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: "This shows that it is permissible to eat, drink, have intercourse etc until dawn comes."

Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said in Fath al-Baari (4/199): "One of the reprehensible innovations that have appeared in our times is giving the second adhaan approximately twenty minutes before Fajr in Ramadaan, and extinguishing the lamps which indicate that it is haraam to eat and drink for those who want to fast. Those who introduced this innovation claim that they are erring on the side of caution with regard to an act of worship."

What is obligatory on all Muslims is that they hold on firmly to the Qur'an and Sunnah and follow it as closely as one can. This is a safeguard for us, so that we don't fall right or left but stay on the middle course. The Prophet (??? ???? ???? ????) described the religion of Islaam that is a middle course between extreme and lenient. Remember these words of the Prophet (??? ???? ???? ????): I leave behind me two things. You will never go astray if you hold fast to them: The Qur'an and my Sunnah.

O Allah! Render the thoughts and inclinations within my heart, to be Your fear and remembrance, and let my endeavour and desire be devoted to what You love and appreciate. Keep my feet firm on Thy Right Path so that I should not stagger, and guide me to the true Faith so that I should not go astray. Ameen!!!

Ramadan Fasting Calendar
Several years ago, my good friend, Umm Abdul Basir made this cute Ramadan calendar. It comes in black and white or color and in English or Arabic versions.

Ramadan Kids' Calendar
It's great for hanging up on a Ramadan bulletin board, or each child can keep it in a Ramadan journal.
What's also great about it, is that there are some Ramadan "stickers" that kids can cut out and glue onto the calendar to show which days they fasted:
